Voytek Kurtyka is likely one of the maximum alpinists of all time. Born in 1947, he used to be one of many best lighting fixtures of the Polish golden age of hiking that redefined Himalayan climbing within the Seventies and 1980s.

His visionary method of hiking ended in many well known ascents, corresponding to the total Broad Peak traverse, the ‘night-naked’ pace climbs of Cho Oyu and Shishapangma and, mainly, the alpine-style first ascent of the West Face of Gasherbrum IV. Dubbed the ‘climb of the century’, his direction on GIV with the Austrian Robert Schauer is – as of 2017 – unrepeated. His such a lot widespread hiking companions have been alpine legends in their time: Polish Himalayan immense Jerzy Kukuczka, Swiss mountain consultant Erhard Loretan and British alpinist Alex MacIntyre.
